Why Solar

Over the last two hundred years, the economi development and increase in the standard of living of developed countries was largely based on the availability of cheap energy. This energy was primarily generated from fossil fuels. However, this finite resource is increasingly becoming more expensive. As a result, solar energy has become an integral component of one of the most challenging tasks of our time: the transformation of our energy generation to renewable energies.

There are several problems with energy production from fossil fuels:

  • Fossil fuels are a finite resource.
  • Demand for energy is increasing in developing countries, most notably in the so-called BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) countries.
  • Most oil producing countries are now and more and more will become net oil importers.
  • Burning of fossil fuels will increase CO2 emissions and therefore impact climate change.
  • All available agricultural land in the world would not be sufficient to provide enough biofuel for about 20 percent of current fuel consumption.

On the other hand, there is more sunshine hits the earth every day than all the energy consumed in the world. Solar energy has a number of important advantages:

  • For all practical purposes, the sun provides an infinite source of energy.
  • Solar PV is a clean form of energy. There is no pollution.
  • There are no fuel cost.
  • Solar PV offers the owner of the system energy independence.
  • Prices for PV system decrease every year.
  • Solar PV system can be deployed anywhere in a very short time.

Ultimately, solar energy is a disruptive technology. Much like a personal computer, where prices continue to drop while performance increases, solar modules and inverters drop in price and increase in efficiency.
